We’re Baaaaackk!

Who do you think you are Mr. Big Shot? Chauncey Billups brought back Mr. Big Shot sunday night as the New York Knicks overcame a 16 point deficit to defeat the Heat in Miami, 91-86.

In a hotly contested game that went down to the wire, it was Billups who ceased the moment. In a span of a minute, Billups had 5 points, a rebound and 2 huge steals. With 1:01 left in the game, Billups drained a long three to put the Knicks ahead 85-84. With the Heat down one with 12.7 seconds left, LeBron James drove to the basket for the go ahead attempt, only to have his shot blocked by Amare Stoudemire. After two Shawne Williams free throws, LeBron would again miss a game tying three from the top of the key.

The win moves the Knicks to 2-1 with their new squad. Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 29 points, 9 rebounds, and a block. What won’t show up in the box score is the tremendous defense Melo played on LeBron, especially in the fourth quarter. What is even more telling of New York’s new commitment to defense, is that Melo asked to coaching staff to let him check LeBron. It is a challenge that Anthony and his teammates must continue to accept in order to contend for a title. Sunday was a nice step in that direction.

Amare Stoudemire added 16 points, 10 rebounds and the one huge block. Billups finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Miami was led by James’ 27 points, 7 rebounds and 5 rebounds. Chris Bosh scored 20 points and hauled in 12 rebounds.

As Amare said during the off-season when he signed his deal, “The Knicks are Back!”…
