The Tampa Bay Rays and St. Louis Cardinals are heading to the postseason, while the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves have completed the two biggest collapses in regular season history.
After leading 3-2 for a majority of the game, Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon blew his 3rd game of the season giving up two runs in the bottom of the 9th as the Orioles won 4-3. Evan Longoria hit a line drive walk-off homer to complete an improbable comeback from 7 runs down to win 8-7 in the 12th to win the Wild Card. The homer was Longoria’s 2nd of the game. The win completes a 9 game September comeback for the Rays.
Over in the National League the St. Louis Cardinals easily defeated the Houston Astros 8-0. They then watched the Atlanta Braves fall to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 in 13 innings to clinch the NL Wild Card. The Wild Card birth completes a Cardinals comeback from an 8.5 game september deficit.
