Taking a cue from two stadium blackouts that caused a delays to the game, the San Francisco 49ers played lights out defense en route to a impressive victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night.
Leading 6-3 entering the fourth quarter, San Fran broke the game open. First Alex Smith hooked up with Vernon Davis for a 1-yard touchdown strike. Smith completed 18/31 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown. Davis caught 5 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. On the Steelers’ next possession the Niners recovered Ben Roethlisberger fumble. They would take advantage of the turnover as Frank Gore rushed 5 yards for a touchdown. Gore rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown.
The Niners defense was led by rookie Aldon Smith’s 2.5 sacks. Smith broke the 49ers single season rookie record for sacks with 13. San Fran picked off Roethlisberger three times, recorded three sacks, and forced him to fumble once. Roethlisberger passed for 330 yards but did not have a touchdown and threw three interceptions.
